Are there any good names left?

Dear Peggy,

I'm starting a company and I'm afraid that all the cool names are gone.

Please tell me I'm wrong.

Signed,
Hopeful

Dear Hopeful,

I'm happy to tell you that in this case, you are wrong. All the cool names are not gone.

We've heard those panicked words many times - all the good ones are taken!

It reminds me of the saying there is nothing new under the sun. In some ways it's true. Same air, same water, same earth. But wouldn't artists have stopped painting and poets stopped writing by now if that were really true - if there really wasn't anything new?

So what we’re looking at is a failure of imagination on the part of the people who are spreading this unpleasant rumor. Some naming consultants even use it as an excuse for coming up with those awful made-up words like Lexmark, Accenture and Thrivent.

If you want find a name that’s cool, go find some cool people to help you. Check out A Hundred Monkeys.

Yours truly,
Peggy
