Naming is like ordering ice cream

Dear Peggy,

Why is naming like ordering ice cream?

Signed,
Curious

Dear Curious,

Naming is like deciding what flavor of ice cream to have because if a dozen people have to agree on a flavor, it's going to be vanilla, not Cherry Garcia. Nobody's excited about it, but they can all agree.

If choosing a name becomes a group exercise, the most interesting names can get swept off the table. A good naming firm won't let that happen.

My favorite naming company A Hundred Monkeys asks, why pick a name that makes you one of the trees in the forest and then spend the rest of your marketing budget trying to stand out? Why choose a plain vanilla product or company name when you can pick one that has a lot of flavor and really reflects who you are?

Yours truly,
Peggy
